Val Mindel & Debra Clifford
Old Time Traveling Music School:
Who we are:
Val Mindel is a founding member of the Any Old Time string band out of California (check out I Bid You Goodnight, Arhoolie’s reissue the band’s two vinyl albums) and has concentrated for the past 20 years on teaching – at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music, music camps such as the Augusta Heritage Center, Allegheny Echoes and Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and workshops throughout the country and abroad. Besides singing with Debra, Val teaches at Jalopy, Brooklyn's growing old-time music school, and with her daughter, Emily Miller, and Jesse Milnes (hear tracks from their album, In the Valley, online at www.valandemmy.com)., as well as North Carolina musician Joe Newberry and West Coast singer Kate Brislin.
Debra Clifford has played in many bluegrass, early country and old time bands, including with Ginny Hawker & Tracy Schwarz, Hazel Dickens, Mac Benford, and Alice Gerrard, and has recorded rhythm guitar with the old time stringband jimmyjohnnnyjoe. When not singing with Val, she sings and plays guitar, mandolin, clawhammer banjo and tenor guitar in the Lonesome Sisters with Sarah Hawker. She was a member of the winning 2009 Clifftop stringband, The Bailers. Debra is also a fine teacher (with the paper to prove it: She's got an MS.Ed!). In addition to workshops with Val, she’s taught at Ashokan Southern Week and will teach again in the summer of 2012. She is also the mayor of Ancestorville, a history & genealogy facebook town with 22,500 members: Stop by and visit!
